The roots of A Program in Wonders could be tracked back to the venture between two individuals, Helen Schucman and William Thetford, equally of whom were prominent psychologists and researchers. The course’s inception occurred in early 1960s when Schucman, who was a clinical and study psychologist at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, began to experience a series of internal dictations. She identified these dictations as originating from an inner voice that discovered it self as Jesus Christ. Schucman initially resisted these experiences, but with Thetford’s encouragement, she started transcribing the messages she received.
Over a period of eight years, Schucman transcribed what can become A Course in Wonders, amounting to three quantities: the Text, the Workbook for Pupils, and the Information for Teachers. The Text sits out the theoretical foundation of the class, elaborating on the primary acim and principles. The Book for Pupils contains 365 classes, one for each time of the year, made to guide the audience via a daily exercise of applying the course’s teachings. The Handbook for Teachers gives further advice on the best way to realize and train the axioms of A Program in Miracles to others.
Among the central subjects of A Class in Wonders is the idea of forgiveness. The class teaches that true forgiveness is the key to inner peace and awareness to one’s heavenly nature. Based on its teachings, forgiveness isn’t merely a ethical or ethical training but a fundamental shift in perception. It requires making move of judgments, grievances, and the belief of crime, and instead, seeing the planet and oneself through the contact of love and acceptance. A Course in Wonders highlights that true forgiveness results in the recognition that we are all interconnected and that separation from each other can be an illusion.
Yet another substantial aspect of A Course in Wonders is its metaphysical foundation. The class presents a dualistic view of fact, unique between the ego, which presents separation, anxiety, and illusions, and the Holy Soul, which symbolizes love, reality, and religious guidance. It implies that the ego is the source of putting up with and conflict, whilst the Sacred Spirit provides a pathway to healing and awakening. The goal of the course is to help people surpass the ego’s restricted perception and align with the Sacred Spirit’s guidance.
